In a magnificent celebration of five decades of artistic excellence, Nrithyodaya – The Academy of Performing Arts, Mumbai, founded by Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan, commemorated its Golden Jubilee with a spectacular presentation titled “The Journey of Excellence.” The event, held before a packed full-house audience at the prestigious Shanmukhananda auditorium, stood as a fitting tribute to fifty years of dedicated service to Indian art and culture.
The evening commenced with a specially produced documentary tracing the institution’s remarkable journey over the past five decades. Interwoven seamlessly with the documentary were live dance presentations performed by nearly seventy students, ranging from the senior-most disciples to the youngest learners, dancing together with their Guru, Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan. The innovative screenplay portrayed the challenges faced in introducing and establishing Bharata Nrityam in a new city and a new milieu, where it initially had to contend with skepticism and criticism before eventually winning acceptance and acclaim. Through unwavering commitment and uncompromising artistic standards, the institution has stood its ground and flourished for fifty years.
Founded in 1976 by Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan, the institution itself bears the name “Nrithyodaya,” bestowed by her Guru, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, signifying the continuation of a glorious artistic lineage. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Padma affectionately referred to Nrithyodaya Mumbai as her “daughter institution” and expressed immense pride in witnessing the manner in which the legacy has been nurtured and carried forward by succeeding generations in this affiliate centre in Mumbai.
The distinguished gathering was graced by Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam as the Chief Guest. The Sanmargadarshi Award was conferred upon Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, in recognition of her exemplary contribution to Indian dance and culture. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. V. Shankar, President of Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha.
One of the most moving highlights of the evening was the celebration of a living artistic lineage spanning three generations. In a rare and heartwarming sight, members of the same family came together on stage: Dr. Jayashree Rajagopalan, her sister Dr. Rajshree Vasudevan, daughters Vaishnavi Anand and Aishwarya Harish, and granddaughters Hiranmayi Anand and Varshini Harish. Their collective participation beautifully embodied the spirit of tradition transmitted from one generation to the next.
The orchestra itself reflected this unique familial bond. Vocal and harmonium support was provided by the younger son-in-law Harish Venkateswaran, while violin accompaniment was rendered by the elder son-in-law Anand Vishwanathan. The rhythmic ensemble featured son Aditya Rajagopalan on the mridangam, grandson Siddhant Anand on the tabla and Vedant Harish on the kanjira, besides participating in dramatic sequences. In addition to her dancing role, Vaishnavi Anand also joined the orchestra to lend vocal support during portions of the production, further enriching the musical tapestry of the evening. Together, the family presented a rare example of art flourishing as a shared heritage and collective sadhana.
A remarkable feature of the production was the specially choreographed concluding presentation by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, conceived to bring together three generations of artistes on a single stage. The presentation received thunderous applause and brought the evening to a memorable climax.
The entire documentary, which formed the backbone of the evening’s presentation, was meticulously researched, scripted and woven together by Aishwarya Harish, who crafted the narrative in an engaging and compelling manner. The production moved effortlessly from one segment to the next, combining visuals, narration, music and dance into a cohesive artistic experience. Such was the pace and flow of the presentation that the audience scarcely had time to blink, and the two-and-a-half-hour programme passed by almost in a breeze, keeping rasikas captivated throughout.
The audience was treated to a rich and varied repertoire showcasing the institution’s vast artistic canvas—from traditional Bharata Nrityam compositions to excerpts from acclaimed dance dramas and thematic productions. Throughout the evening, the emphasis remained on artistic integrity, cultural rootedness and the spirit of innovation that has characterized Nrithyodaya’s journey.
As the curtains came down, the atmosphere was one of gratitude, pride and celebration. The Golden Jubilee programme concluded on a soaring note, leaving the audience with a profound appreciation for the enduring legacy of Nrithyodaya – The Academy of Performing Arts, Mumbai, and reaffirming its place as a beacon of excellence dedicated to preserving and promoting India’s timeless artistic heritage.
After fifty glorious years, Nrithyodaya continues to stand firm on the foundations laid by its Guru-parampara, carrying forward the ideals of discipline, devotion and creativity, while inspiring future generations through the transformative power of art.
